Below you will find programs and scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students, internships for high school and college students, postdoctoral fellowships, a special program for early career researchers, faculty and senior researchers. Some of these programs are available only at NASA centers, while others support university students or researchers. Some are funded through NASA’s Mission Directorate, but many are funded by other NASA directors, NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement, or organizations outside of NASA. Some programs are open to more than one cohort (postdoctoral, master’s, undergraduate or high school).

Stem Careers: Just For Students

A nationally competitive STEM program for high school students. The program offers selected students opportunities in Earth and space exploration. Interns learn to interpret NASA satellite data while working with scientists and engineers in their chosen field of work.

GeneLab for High Schools (GL4HS) is an intensive four-week training program for high school juniors and seniors sponsored by NASA’s Ames Research Center (near Mountain View, California). GL4HS provides students with an opportunity to enter life in space with a special focus on omics-based bioinformatics research, collection and analysis of complex biological data such as the genetic code, and computational biology.

The BMSIS Young Scholars Program (YSP) provides students and early-career researchers with the opportunity to engage in basic research, learn about effective communication, and develop critical thinking skills in ethics, politics, and more. Successful applicants will join BMSIS as Research Associates (RAs) for the duration of the program. The program focuses on undergraduate students and those who have completed high school but have not yet entered high school.

NASA established the National Space Grant College and Scholarship Project known as Space Grant in 1989. Space Grant is a national network of colleges and universities. These institutions work to expand Americans’ ability to understand and participate in NASA’s aerospace programs by supporting and enhancing engineering education, research, and human endeavors. The National Space Grants Network includes more than 850 partners from universities, colleges, industry, museums, centers, and state and local agencies. These partners are part of a consortium of 52 in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The 52 consortia fund grants and scholarships for students pursuing careers in math, engineering and technology, or STEM, as well as curriculum enhancement and teacher development. Member colleges and universities administer pre-college education programs and public services in their state.

Fellowships & Grants

Being an astronaut isn’t the only cool thing about space. Interns use their creativity and innovation to work on projects that impact NASA’s mission, such as returning to the Moon in 2024. As a NASA intern, you will be part of a great team dedicated to space exploration. By participating in research projects and missions, you will work with experts and gain valuable experience.

Competition. During the internship, students work with US and other foreign interns under the guidance of a NASA mentor.

An internship at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is an opportunity to do the impossible. Our internships put you in action alongside the scientists and engineers who helped make JPL a center for robotic exploration of the solar system. Our programs are as diverse as our positions, with opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, and faculty in STEM fields.

At NASA, you have the opportunity to work and pursue a career while in school. The Pathways program offers paid work experience for current students and recent graduates with an active career development program early in their careers.

The L’SPACE program offers students two unique learning experiences: the Mission Concept Academy (MCA) and the NASA Proposal Writing and Evaluation Experience Academy (NPWEE). Students can choose one Academy to apply to each semester.

USRA awards college scholarships to students who have demonstrated an interest in a career or engineering with a concentration in space exploration or space education and aviation. Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students attending an accredited four-year college or university offering a bachelor’s degree or engineering degree. Applicants must be within two (2) years of receiving their BS. or B.A. in engineering, including life and education at the time of the award. Awards are given in the fall, applications are accepted in the summer. Details of deadlines can be found on the website.

SARP is an eight-week summer program for undergraduate students to gain research experience in all aspects of scientific activity using one or more of NASA’s Aircraft Program Flight Laboratories (aircraft used for SARP include the DC-8, P-3B, Sherpa, and ER-2). Research areas include atmospheric chemistry, air quality, forest ecology and marine biology. Along with aerial data collection, students participate in field measurements. The program ends with a formal presentation of research results and conclusions.
